Abstract
Vaccination against bacterial diseases was carried out on several soft-shelled turtle (Trionyx sinensis) farms in Huzhou, Xiaoshan, in 1997 and 1998. An Al(OH)3 adjuvanted vaccine was prepared with 4 strains of Aeromonas sobria (6 x 109 cfu/ml), which was inactivated with 3.5% formalin for 24 h. Serum agglutination titres in immunized mice and turtles were 29 and 27 on days 21-35 and day 15 after inoculation, respectively. Survival of mice and turtles were 100% on day 30 after vaccination. In field tests, the mortality of immunized turtles decreased by 50% compared with unvaccinated turtles.
