Abstract
Understanding the impact of human activities on species and their habitats is a primary step to developing practical conservation solutions aimed at reversing a species' decline. For highly threatened species, a successful recovery program may invoke a combination of ex situ and in situ methods. These approaches are exemplified by the recovery project to the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), which was begun in 1995 in the French Rhone-Alpes region. This article points out also how efforts to conserve the pond turtle Emys orbicularis will benefit the whole environment. Some of the varied aspects of the project discussed are the field survey for relictual populations. a study of competition with the introduced redeared turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans), and a program to reintroduce the pond turtle at Bourget Lake.
