Abstract
Twenty-four specimens of european pond turtle, Emys orbicularis fritzjuergenobsti (Fritz, 1993) and 23 of red-eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans (Wied, 1838) from different localities of the Valencian Community (Nules, Gandía, Almenara, Puzol,...) have been studied for parasites. This work was part of a control program of the populations of introduced species by the “Conselleria de Territorio y Vivienda de la comunidad Valenciana”. Only turtles that were found dead during sampling were examined for helminths. Very different results were found for these two hosts. Seventeen specimens of Emys orbicularis (Prevalence = 70.83%) were parasitized by nematodes. Falcaustra sp. (Kathlaniidae) was the dominant species. Only one specimen of Trachemys scripta was parasitized by nematodes and another was parasitized by trematodes of the genus Telorchis. The prevalence of infected aloctone hosts was 8.70%. These data have allowed us to characterize the helminth communities of Emys orbicularis and Trachemys scripta in the Valencian Community. We will offer data on the diversity, prevalence, intensity and abundance of helminth infra-communities.
