Abstract     
From faecal samples and stomach contents of three species of terrapins, Erymnochelys madagascariensis (Chelonia: Podocnemididae), Pelomedusa subrufa and Pelusios castanoides (Chelonia: Pelomedusidae) from several localities of Madagascar, a survey of their gastrointestinal helminths was conducted in order to determine the presence, prevalence, and diversity of parasites in these freshwater turtles. Five nematode species were found: Atractis chabaudi Petter, 1966 (Atractidae); Serpinema microcephalus (Dujardin, 1845) (Camallanidae); Falcaustra sp. (Kathlaniidae); Spiroxys sp. (Gnathostomatidae); y Cosmocercoidea gen. sp. A. chabaudi revealed as “core species” (prevalence of infection > 30%) in the helminth communities of E. madagascariensis and P. subrufa. Also, Spiroxys sp. was a core species in the helminth communities of P. subrufa and P. castanoides, although it was a “satellite species” (prevalence < 10%) in the helminth community of E. Madagascariensis. Data of prevalence of infection of the gastrointestinal nematodes of E. madagascariensis and P. subrufa suggest an inverse relationship between A. chabaudi and Spiroxys sp.: the prevalence of infection of A. chabaudi increases when that of Spiroxys sp. decreases. E. madagascariensis was the most parasitised turtle, since all five nematodes were found in it. Only two parasite species (A. chabaudi and Spiroxys sp.) were found in P. subrufa and only one parasite species, Spiroxys sp. was found in P. castanoides.
