Abstract |
Of the three species of freshwater turtles occurring in Europe, two are found in Spain- Mauremys leprosa and Emys orbicularis. In the Red Data Book for spanish vertebrates (Blanco and González 1992) M. leprosa is classified as "not threatened", and E. orbicularis as "vulnerable". However populations of both species in Spain are generally considered to be decreasing throughout their distribution range, already being very rare in several regions (Galán and Fernández 1993). Habitat loss and pet trade are problems which typically affect turtles in Spain. In the National Park of Doñana the two species coexist. In 1991 a project was started, which aimed to assess the actual distribution, key habitat identification, current conservation status and dynamick of the chelonian populations in the Park. Here we present the results on distribution patterns of the two freshwater turtles
