Abstract
Testudinidae The topographic anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract is illustrated by he dissection of a maleand a female Greek tortoise (Testudo hermanni spp.).29 Greek tortoises (24 females and 5 males) were submitted to radiographic evaluation. Thestandard views that allow the best visualization of the intestinal tract are described. Radiographicanatomy of the digestive system, which is essential to proper interpretation is illustrated anddiscussed.4 contrast-media (Barium sulfate suspension, Prontobario Gastrografin Microtrast-Paste) areevaluated at their radiographic properties and at their diagnostic suitability for diagnosis in thetortoise. The required amount and the administration technique of these contrast-media aredescribed. Their partial and total passage times in relation to temperature are determined. To allow a better orientation in radiographic and ultrasonic evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract,as well as in surgical approaches in the tortoise, two anatomic reference systems are established. The role of large intestine foreign bodies and their influence on the passage of contrast media isdiscussed. Pathologic findings of the gastrointestinal tract of the tortoise and the possibility ofradiographic visualization are described. The gains and limits of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluationof the digestive system of the tortoise are elucidated.Key words:Tortoise, gastrointestinal tract, radiography, contrast-media, passage times, reference system, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging.
