Abstract |
Testudinidae Geochelone carbonaria and Geochelone denticulata occur sympatrically in Brazilian Amazonia. In this paper I estimated the abundance of both species in the Uatuma River basin, Amazonas state, in areas that were inundated after the construction of the Balbina hydroelectric dam. G. denticulata was found to be more abundant than G. carbonaria. Reproduction data were obtained for six female G. denticulata specimens at different periods, during 1987. The reproductive period lasted a minimum of five months during the dry season. Variability in taxonomic characters were observed.
