Abstract
Testudinidae The faeces of 134 tortoises (Testudo hermanni, T. graeca and Agrionemys horsfieldii) freshly imported to Munich, GFR, were examined for helminths. All were infected with mixed oxyurids. Mehdiella uncinata and Tachygonetria dentata were commoner in younger tortoises and Atractis dactyluris in older ones. Thaparia spp. occurred only in a few tortoises in light infections. There might be 97 to 35 200 worms/ colon. 23 tortoises were infected with ascarids, Angusticaecum holoptera (1 to 18 worms each). In therapeutic studies, citarin (tetramisole) and ivermectin by subcutaneous injection or by mouth produced toxic effects. The best compound to use was mebendazole 100 to 200 mg/kg body-weight given by mouth every 5 days for 4 doses; this reduced the oxyurids by 71 to 100% and removed all the ascarids. Complete decrease was not seen until 10 days after the last dose. Other compounds tested included dichlorvos and thiabendazole.
