Abstract |
Kinosternon flavescens develops three concomitant ovarian follicle size classes during the activity season, but deposits only one clutch. The smallest follicles represent clutches to be oviposited two years later. Eggs have a high lipid content. These characteristics might be a strategy to survive in an environment which necessitates dormancy for extended periods of time. Individual egg width, dry mass, clutch dry mass, and clutch size increased with female size. Egg width positively correlated with egg dry mass.
