Abstract
The body temperatures selected by box turtles (T. carolina ) and painted turtles (C. picta ) in thermal gradients were measured before and after they were injected with live bacteria (Aeromonas hydrophila ). Mean body temperatures increased 4-5 degree C following infection. Turtles are therefore capable of developing behavioural fevers as are certain iguanid lizards.
