Abstract |
Testudinidae Testudo graeca Examination of faecal samples of 96 tortoises showed that all were infected with the oxyurid genera Tachygonetria, Mehdiella, Thaparia and Atractis. The ascarid Angusticaecum holoptera was identified in 60 tortoises. Oral treatment with febantel twice at 50 mg/kg body weight (including shell) at a 14-day interval was completely effective against all nematodes. A single dose of 50 mg/kg was effective against oxyurids, but a second treatment was necessary for control of ascarids. Two doses of fenbendazole, 50 mg/kg at a 14-day interval, also gave good control of nematodes. Flubendazole, 60 mg/kg twice at a 7-day interval, was unsatisfactory. No adverse effects were observed.
