Abstract |
Testudinidae Exact data on the reproduction of the 2 pp. of South American land tortoises (Geochelone carbonaria and G. denticulata) are presented. Measurements and weight of the eggs for G. carbonaria and G. denticulata are given. Duration of the incubation period was a maximum of 202 days and a minimum of 105 days for G. carbonaria and a maximum of 152 days and a minimum of 128 days for G. denticulata. Presence of the oviruptor (egg caruncle) occurred in G. carbonaria at a maximum of 95 days and a minimum of 28 days. The number of eggs ranges from 2-7 for G. carbonaria, and from 1-8 for G. denticulata, but is generally lower. Males and females become sexually active after about 5 yr in G. carbonaria, but copulation was not observed. A specimen (carapace length: 24.7 cm; weight: 2800 g) laid eggs for the 1st time after 11 yr of age.
