Abstract |
Descriptive analysis of court and copulation behavior of Hydromedusa maximiliani (Mikan, 1820) (Testudines, Chelidae) in laboratory. Hydromedusa maximiliani is a species that is endemic to mountainous regions, with significant distribution at Mata Atlântica region, along Brazil’s southeastern and northeastern mountain ranges. Few are the works related to the reproduction of this species. The scarcity of information on the behavior of H. maximiliani perhapscoulddifficulty theaccomplishment of studies in field, for the fact they possess half-aquatic habits. This work aimed to describe the court and copulation behavior of this species in laboratory. Four stages of court and copulation behavior had been observed: meeting of the couple, persecution to the female, daily pay-copulation and copulation. The information supplied in the present study are the first ones carried out, regarding the reproductive behavior, what supplies information that can contribute for this species biology knowledge.
