Abstract
Testudinidae The Greek Tortoise (Testudo graeca) is an introduced species in Balearic herpetofauna. Nowadays it is located in the villages of Andratx and Calvià, as well as on a small site on the island of Formentera. The most important of these because of its area and reproductive stock is found in Calvià. This village suffers great urban pressure, which has caused the fragmentation and destruction of the habitat of the species, and as a result has led to a worsening in its state of conservation. We carried out 66 capture-recapture sessions from May to October 2005. We also took information about the sex, size and weight of each of the individuals found. The population size of the adults and sub-adults was calculated, using the Schnabel method, obtaining 217 and 94 individuals for each of the studied sites, which means a population density of 1,79 ind/ha and 1,46 ind/ha. We also calculated the sex ratio for each locality obtaining different results: 1:4 and 2:3. Financial support for the study was provided by the “SA NOSTRA” Foundation within the Convocatoria d’Ajuts per a Projectes de Conservació de la Biodiversitat 2005.
