The University of Evansville has an indoor captive breeding colony of 47 Malayan box turtles, Cuora amboinensis. The majority of the animals are from two Asian confiscations (December 2001 and March 2003). New arrivals were quarantined for three to six months and, at a minimum, treated with Panacur for nematodes and usually Metronidazole for amoebas and flagelletes. The animals are housed in three large fiberglass containers with water that circulates through all three tanks before going through filtration. At this time the population appears healthy. No animals have died in the last two years, the majority of females are now successfully reproducing, and the subadults are maturing into reproductive adults. Yet as expected, the colony is home to a number of parasites: Protozoans (Entamoeba, Coccidia), an occasional Trematode (fluke), and a variety of Nematodes species. This poster will discuss the taxa found.
