Pelusios andansonii The Sahelian terrapin reaches the most Northern distribution of its genus (Pelusios, Wagler). Its natural habitat is in the warm water of certain wetlands of West and East Africa from Senegal in Ethiopia. Described there two and a half centuries ago, little research has been completed concerning its general ecology. The only investigations undertaken have been limited to its systematic arrangement, its distribution and its morphological description. In 2004, a team of French and Senegalese students, led by Tomas Diagne of NGO Nature Tropicale/Senegal, initiated a detailed long-term study. This investigation focused on the census, monitoring of the wild populations, biology, and behaviour of this species in their natural environment Guiers Lake North east Senegal. We introduce in this presentation, the first results of this work which aims at the best comprehension of the needs for this terrapin to influence the decision-making for conservation and management of the wild populations of this species.
