Abstract
Rhinoclemmys nasuta is an endemic species of the Chocoan Biogeographic Province of Ecuador and Colombia, and has been categorized as Data Deficient by the IUCN. We studied an apparently stable and closed population on Isla Palma, at the mouth of Málaga Bay, near the middle of the Pacific coast of Colombia. Specimens were captured by hand, measured, weighed and individually marked. A total of 434 individuals were collected from 7 small streams. The species exhibits marked sexual size dimorphism, with mean female carapace length of 17.59 ± 2.49 cm and weight of 747.89 ± 318.44 g, and for males 15.35 ± 1.45 cm and 443.41 ± 132.1 g. Estimated population size was 662 (N) individuals (464 ≤ N ≤ 1151 individuals), with a sex ratio of 1.3:1.0 females to males. The reproductive period is probably between April and June, at a minimum, as evidenced by gravid females found during May and June. Analysis of fecal samples suggests an opportunistic, herbivorous diet. Based on incremental growth of recaptured individuals, the intrinsic growth rate of juveniles is 0.97 cm·year-1. Spatial distribution showed a tendency to aggregation of locations as determined by radiotelemetry, however male movements of up to 100 m were recorded, always in association with the same stream.
