Abstract
A review of 19 years of captive maintanence, breeding, egg-laying, and raising of young will be discussed. It will also include the legal importing, geographical location of captivity, access to information, private property, and relentless dedication to the task, all aided in successful husbandry techniques. Success will be defined as, adapting wild Manouria to healthy captives that reproduce viable young consistantly, and the raising of the offspring for near two decades. The control of parasites, diet, and large outside enclosures resulted in no chronic illnesses in a herd that started with one pair to over 65 animals. “Low Tech” methods and the ability to sell offspring made it financially possible for the keeper’s continued care for them. Major events were nest building, egg laying, hatching techniques, dealing with cold weather and thermo strategy, and the ability to judge their heath by their posture, looking in their mouths, and the condition of eyes. Lastly, the moving of the entire collection to a new location after 18 years will be considered.
