Testudinidae Pyxis planicauda Due to the unique habitat requirements of this rare little tortoise, captive husbandry and reproduction are far from being fully understood. According to field observations, the tortoises are active only during the short rainy season, usually November through April. Even during that time, the tortoises are inactive when there are multiple days of dry warm weather. From May until October, the tortoises are dormant under the leaf litter awaiting the next rain. This type of life cycle is difficult to replicate in captivity but strides are being made constantly to correct this. At Knoxville Zoological Gardens, our P. planicauda are maintained outside from May until October in order to simulate their active season as in the wild. Exposure to natural sunlight along with feeding a more diverse diet appears to be the key components to our success with P. planicauda. Much more work is still needed, as consistent reproduction is far from the norm and for most, including us, failures far outweigh successes with this species.
