Abstract
Trionyx With the greatly appreciated support of the Turtle Conservation Fund (TCF), a survey was conducted in Bangladesh to verify the validity of the black soft-shelled turtle, Aspideretes nigricans, in July 2006. The aim was to collect tissue samples to compare A. nigricans from the terra typica, the Bostami Temple Pond near Chittagong, with the recently discovered population in the Brahmaputra river system in North-east India, and with all other species of the Genus Asopideretes as well as close related taxa such as Nilssonia formosa. Additionally, other rivers were surveyed for the black soft-shelled turtle in the wild of Bangladesh. This is important because in the last years Bangladesh has been one of the most extensive consumers of turtles and exporters of living turtles and turtle products. With the banning of the turtle trade per law, the turtle traders are supposed to have shifted their business from the bigger cities to more remote areas. In light of this development, we attempted to ascertain the extent of topical turtle harvesting of different regions throughout the country.
