Abstract
Dermatemys mawii: meeting held in Villahermosa, Tabasco to determine the advisability of a status change from CITES appendix II to CITES appendix I. About 30 people attended the meeting from all sectors including PROFEPA, SEMARNAP, private sector turtle breeders, university researchers, pet dealers, and conservation organizations. The overwhelming consensus reached was even though Dermatemys fits the characteristics of a species that could be listed on Appendix I it would do little to protect the species and would only hinder conservation efforts. A new project to raise Dermatemys is being set up in El Moro, Veracruz. Two Dermatemys proposals were funded by TSA this winter. TSA members continue to attempt to rehabilitate the turtle farm in Nacajuca, Tabasco. Trachemys adiutrix has been found in another state in Brazil. Populations studies are showing this species to be abundant in many areas. DNA samples have been collected from over 100 individuals to compare them to the nearest populations: Trachemys dorbigni in southern Brazil, Trachemys chichirivichi of Venezuela, and Trachemys elegans of the international pet trade. Podocnemis expansa: Brazil continues to promote the idea that by raising hatchlings in captivity to supply the addiction for serving turtle at special feasts the strain will be taken off natural populations. Turtles in many of these farms have reached slaughter size and are being sold to the public for food. At least one legitimate restaurant in Manaus serves turtle from one of these farms, the special turtle platter sells for R$45/kg, (about $10.US per pound) while live weight they are asking R$8.5/kg. It is too early to tell if this is making a dent in the turtle black market or not. The National Museu de Tortuga in Mazunte, Oaxaca, Mexico is breeding freshwater turtles in captivity, particularly of interest is Rhinoclemmys rubida and Trachemys grayi. They have recuperated the facility since hurricane damage and have funds to rebuild a much larger facility including more space for exhibition and breed freshwater species.
