Abstract
Basic aspects of reproductive ecology in the Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) were studied at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Louisiana. Data were obtained from nest surveys around the periphery of the lake, which have been conducted intermittently since 1997. Most data were collected in the 2002–2005 period. Oviposition takes place over an approximately two-week period between the months of April and June. A total of 31 ovipositional sites were found containing 14 intact, 7 partially destroyed, and 10 destroyed nests. Clutch size averaged 29.9 eggs (N = 14, range 15-44). Average egg weight for 21 nests was 31.26 g, and average egg length and width for 20 nests were 38.41 and 36.81 mm, respectively. In 2004 and 2005, nest surveying was systematized to transects along shoreline segments. Twenty-two nests were found along a railroad causeway adjoining the lake and two along a forest– uncultivated cotton field edge (N=24). Data from the 2004 and 2005 surveys demonstrated that female Macrochelys selected an anthropogenic habitat along the railroad causeway as opposed to other shoreline habitat surveyed. Distinctive habitat parameters for the causeway included a relatively open canopy and steep slope close to the water.
