Abstract
Recent distribution records (1977–2002) of Emys orbicularis are summarized for Samara and Ul’yanovsk provinces (Russia). The records are located in 13 of 27 administrative districts into which Samara province is now divided and in 11 of 21 districts of Ul’yanovsk province. The distribution of the European pond turtle in the Middle Volga river region completely covers Samara and Ul’yanovsk provinces. Despite its wide distribution in the region, the total number of adult European pond turtles in Samara and Ul’yanovsk provinces does not exceed a few hundred specimens and probably declines.
