Two new projects; Ilisu Dam and Improvement of Tigris Valley were put into agenda by the Turkish government and the Municipality of Diyarbakir, respectively. The Turkish government says the Ilisu Dam project, planned for more than two decades, will provide much-needed hydro-electric energy and jobs in a poor region. But opponents believe it will devastate the area’s environment and cultural heritage, as well as displacing more than 50,000 people. On the other hand, the Municipality of Diyarbakir has planned to build up two artificial small lakes in the city center of Diyarbakir between historical Ten Eyed Bridge and Silvan Bridge of Tigris River. Those two artificial lakes will hold 13 million m3 of water and destroy about 16 km of river side where Rafetus euphraticus use for nesting and egg laying. We, here, describe current status of populations of Rafetus euphraticus in the Tigris basin of Southeastern Turkey based on data collected since 1987. We surveyed Rafetus euphraticus populations within the Tigris River from the Iraqi border to Devegecidi Dam Lake, the northern most recorded occurrence of the species. Water temperature, pH and bottom structure measurements were taken at each site to characterize aquatic habitat. Probable effects of the two new projects were discussed.
