Abstract
The trade of chelonians in Southeast and East Asian regions for various purposes is believed to have posed serious impacts on the chelonian fauna. In the case of turtle trade in Taiwan, importation of turtle plastrons is the most serious problem, as much as 1,675,149 Kg imported from China and Southeast Asian countries from 1999 to 2006. Since most of the freshwater turtles and tortoises traded in the Southeast and East Asian regions have been listed on CITES appendices in 2002, the international trade should be monitored under CITES regulations. Ironically, the trade volume has increased greatly since then. Although the trade data were listed without details of species, it is believed that most of them were CITES-listed species. More closely monitoring of turtle plastron trade is strongly recommended. There were also huge numbers of hatchling Trachemys scripta elegans have been imported from the United States, many of them were believed to have been trans-shipped to China illegally.
