Abstract
Testudinidae We report on a journey to Libya con-ducted in spring of 2005 in search of the Egyptian tortoise, Testudo kleinmanni. Its find in the region of the Gulf of Sirt at Bin Jawwad east of the town of Sirte represents a first record of this species for this region. We furthermore found Testudo kleinmanni within the known distribution range in Tripolitania and in the Cyrenaika. The possible range of this species within Libya is discussed, as is our evaluation of its conservation status particularly in the light its ongoing collection for the pet trade.
