Abstract |
Emys orbicularis The « Reserve Naturelle de la Mazière » has undertaken the study of a European pond turtle population situated in the upstream section of the Ourbise. This site is classed in zone “Natura 2000”and is localized at 20 km south-west from the “Reserve Naturelle de la Mazière”. European pond turtles have been caught in a pool, two ponds and the Ourbise thanks to livelies and pots. Then, turtles were marked and 5 females have been equipped with a transmitter in order to follow them by radio-tracking during the egg-laying period. Seven trapping sessions have been brought, allowing the catch of 31 individuals. However, this population is made of at least 32 individuals. The sex-ratio is slightly unbalanced in favour of females and most of age groups are present. This population’s biometric characteristics are very close to turtles from the “Reserve Naturelle de la Mazière”, which could mean a common origin. The radio-tracking follow-up has allowed the discovery of only one egg-laying on the 8th of June, predated afterwards. Nevertheless, important travels for some females have been highlighted and favourable places for egg- laying have been found and would deserve to be confirmed. Key words: European pond turtle -Emys orbicularis - Ourbise - Egg-laying zones - Radio-tracking
