Abstract |
EFFECTS OF ADRENALECTOMY, DEOXYCORTICOSTERONE ADMINISTRATION, AND PERITONEAL LOADS OF HYPERTONIC AND HYPOTONIC SALINE ON THE DRINKING BEHAVIOR OF FRESHWATER TURTLES WERE STUDIED IN 2 EXPERIMENTS. RATHER THAN PRODUCING A SUSTAINED ELEVATION IN EXOGENOUS SALINE CONSUMPTION, AS IS THE CASE WITH MAMMALS, ADRENALECTOMY YIELDED ONLY AN IMMEDIATE INCREASE IN NACL INTAKE IN REPTILES, WHICH BY THE 2ND DAY RETURNED TO THE LEVELS OF SHAM-OPERATED SS. HYPERTONIC SALINE LOAD WAS FOLLOWED BY CONSIDERABLY ELEVATED DISTILLED WATER INTAKE, BUT NEITHER HYPOTONIC LOAD NOR INTRAPERITONEAL INJECTION OF THE MINERALOCORTICOID PRODUCED A CHANGE IN SALINE OR DISTILLED WATER CONSUMPTION.
