Abstract     
Chrysemys picta DATA OF 2 EXPERIMENTS INDICATE THAT WATER CONSUMPTION OF A SPECIES OF FRESH-WATER TURTLE IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO DEGREE OF ANTECEDENT DEPRIVATION. STRIKING AQUASTATIC PRECISION AS REFLECTED BY MALE CENTRAL PAINTED TURTLES ON 48- AND 72-HR DEPRIVATION-AMOUNT OF WATER CONSUMED FOLLOWING SUCH DEHYDRATION WAS ALMOST IDENTICAL TO THAT TAKEN IN 2 AND 3 DAYS BY NONDEPRIVED SS. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ELECTROLYTE BALANCE IN REPTILE DRINKING WAS ALSO EVIDENT IN A COMPARISON OF SERUM ELECTROLYTE LEVELS AND DRINKING BY SS WATER-DEPRIVED FOR 0, 3, 5, AND 7 DAYS. SERUM NA+ CONCENTRATIONS, OBTAINED BY FLAME PHOTOMETRY, PARALLELED WATER INTAKE FOR DIFFERENTIALLY DEHYDRATED GROUPS. DATA ARE RELATED TO A WATER CONSERVATION MECHANISM.
