Abstract |
Observed elevated urinary alkali metal (combined Na+ and K+) in 39 electrically shocked male turtles as compared with nonshocked controls. Potentiated cation excretion continued even in the absence of shock when Ss were retained in the same surround on subsequent days, but fell to the level of controls if Ss were removed to a new environment. It is concluded that elevated urinary alkali metal in experimental Ss was the consequence of a conditioned emotional response to the antecedent shock situation, even though the findings are at variance with data obtained from rats.
