Abstract
The Western Pond turtle (Actinemys marmorata) has nearly disappeared from Washington State, with no wild populations left in the Puget Sound region. In order to place this loss in a deeper historical context, the archaeological and ethnographic literature for the region was reviewed. A. marmorata is nearly absent from the regional prehistoric record, and may be best explained by extremely low populations levels throughout the Holocene or as a historic introduction.
