Abstract
The current study examines the effects of incubation temperature on incubation duration and hatchling fitness on a captive colony of Malayan box turtles (Cuora amboinensis). Incubation temperature plays an important role in both the embryonic and post-embryonic development of the hatchlings. Small changes in incubation temperature affect incubation duration. Both extremely high and low temperatures have detrimental effects on embryonic development and hatchling success. Eggs were incubated at four different temperatures: 24°C, 28°C, 30°C, and 32°C. These temperatures were compared to the number of days from nesting to pipping and subsequent survival rates of hatchlings. About 95% of the variation in incubation duration was due to incubation temperature (R2= 0.947). Increasing incubation temperature significantly decreased incubation duration by 8.3 days per degree. Eggs incubated at 32°C had a significantly lower survivorship rate; therefore, 32°C may be near the maximum temperature for successful embryonic development in this species. Hatchling size and growth were measured at two-week intervals from pipping date. Righting ability and food consumption were evaluated at 2, 4, and 8 weeks post-pipping. Data are still being collected for these assays. Currently there are no significant differences in morphometrics or behavior of hatchlings incubated at different temperatures
