Abstract
Testudinidae Geochelone radiata gigantea Dipsochelys sulcata nigra Blood samples were collected from tortoises of the Geochelone group kept in captivity to determine their normal blood plasma chemistry values. The analyses included determination of total protein, creatinine, glucose, uric acid, blood urea nitrogen, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium. High levels of plasma uric acid, calcium and glucose were present in healthy young Geochelone sulcata tortoises with rapid growth. Hypoglycaemia, hyperuricaemia, hyperphosphataemia, elevated ALP and AST reflected serious changes of the hepatic and renal function in one Geochelone gigantea tortoise with clinical signs of wasting syndrome.
