Abstract
Eggs from caplive reptiles are usually incubated al a constanl rempc:ralure. In nature. Eggs in nests undergo daily temperature fluctuations. In order to simulale Ihis situation, a simple incubator with daily fluctuating temperatures was developed. The heating system consists of two thermostat heaters of which the one providing the higher temperature is connected to a timer. Tbc aim was to investigate whether the eggs were resistant to daily temperature fluctuation and to find out if boIh sexes were stiIl produced, given that the sex of the hatchlings is determined by the incubation temperature. Eggs of Chrysemys picta marginata and Trachemys scripta elegans were tested using different temperarure regimes. As all the eggs hatched, it seems that fluctuating temperature had no detrimental effect on the embryonic development. We now have to wail until lhe young reach sexual maturity to determine whether both sexes were produced and if they are fertile.
