Abstract |
Testudinidae The occurrence of white tortoises (albinos) hatching in captivity is still relatively rare. Albinism is characterized by a partial lack or total absence of melanin pigment in the eyes and skin. The eyes of an animal with albinism occasionally appear to be red. All these characteristics can be found in a captive bred Testudo marginata. The breeder (AB) recognized this disorder instantly. From a clutch of 8 eggs one true albino tortoise was born in an incubator in May 2009. At present this albino marginated tortoise behaves normally and eats well. Until now we could not observe any sensitivity to sunlight or visual problems which are typical for albinism in other species.
