Lampropeltis alterna is part of a group of snakes (others include Bogertophis subocularis, Trimorphodon vilkonsonii, Crotalus lepidus, C. scutulatus) whose ranges lie to the west on the Edwards Plateau but which do not reach the Escarpment.
