Abstract |
Testudo hermanni hermanni The Hermann’s tortoise is currently one of the most threatened reptiles within Europe and at a global level. Its decline has been recorded very early in Western Europe (Italy, France, Spain) and its future is seriously jeopardized. In France, the species has totally disappeared from the “Massif des Albères” (Eastern Pyrenees) around the 60-70s. Only fragmented populations remain in the Var and in Corsica. Conservation measures have been undertaken for about 20 years, but they did not succeed in stopping the populations decline, due to several causes : urbanisation and transformation of the seashore, forest fire, pet collection, use of heavy machines for agriculture and forestry and decline of traditional pastoralism. Unless efficient measures are implemented in the near future, the extinction of the last mainland population (Var) and a strong decline of the Corsican populations will be unavoidable. This document provides latest knowledge about the species, describes the main threats facing the species, reviews past actions and proposes new guidelines to improve the conservation status of the species in France. It aims at providing a general organisation and coordination framework for the conservation actions that will be developped in the near future.
