The status and the role of Emys orbicularis in scientific research programs is described for France. Engagement in popular science and habitat conservation measures help to protect the existing E. orbicularis populations. Several action plans were necessary to legally prevent the import of the non-native turtle Trachemys scripta elegans, a species which is suspected to interfere with naturally occurring E. orbicularis populations.
