Abstract |
The objective of this research is to investigate if there is any morphometrical variation of the gut, depending on the age, of Trachemys dorbigni, Podocnemis expansa, P. unifiliis and P. sextuberculata. To achieve it, several morphometric data were obtained, and Student's t test was applied to the proportion gut length/carapace length. The results indicate that the gut increase occurs in different periods in P. expansa and P. unifilis, and it occurs earlier in the former species, during the transition between individuals younger than 1 year to individuals whose age is between 1 and 5 years. In P. unifiliis this transition occurs in individuals whose age is between 1 and 5 years to more older individuals. The length of the intestine seems to be related with the increase of consumption of vegetal food in T. dorbignyi. P. sextuberculata is a more carnivorous species than P. expansa and P. unifiliis, and has a smaller relative gut length. In P. expansa and P. unifilis the stomach presents a constriction which delimits two regions in this organ, absent in T. dorbignyi and P. sextuberculata Key words: Trachemys, Podocnemis, captivity, digestive system, food habit Added by: Admin Last edited by: Beate Pfau |
