Abstract |
Testudinidae During a chelonian field trip between February and March 2011, the author had the chance to look at several places for the Namibian endemic species Homopus solus. Long-term known, but not well described as “Homopus bergeri”, this species is still nearly unknown. Most data are acquired from museum specimens and the captive colony of Mr. Alfred Schleicher (Windhoek, Namibia). Most basic data on its natural history are lacking. Up to now no live specimen has been found in its habitat, but on streets, in gardens or on the ground of a public school. Here for the first time details on the habitats were investigated. No live specimen has been found, however several carcasses of dead specimens as well as the finding of the first clutch in the wild ever. The observed conditions are described, such as location of the nest, details of clutch size, egg dimensions, thermal conditions etc.
