Abstract |
Testudinidae Testudo hermanni The Amics de la Tortuga de l’Albera created the tortoise breeding center of Albera to improve the conservation status of the last native population of Western Hermann’s Tortoise around the Iberian Peninsula, currently endangered. In the center is held captive breeding population for reinforcements. Unfortunately the success of these efforts has been affected by the high pressure of predators. For this reason and based on results of a pilot assay we have build a terrarium room to produce tortoise with a high size and ensure their survival during the reinforcement. We have also conducted a census with detector dogs in an interesting area to assess the need for intervention in-situ and ex-situ. Finally we have published a manual of best management practices with the aim to raise local owners and to consolidate Albera Stewardship Network.
