Recently the specialist publications are discussing animosities that are felt by the reptile keepers’ scene. This article evaluates the different trends of animal welfare organizations and conservationist on the one hand and the commercial wildlife trade on the other hand. Furthermore the historical role of different associations regarding their influence on the legislation and its enforcement is examined. We come to the following conclusions: a) The majority of reproaches that reptile keepers feel to subjected are simply caused by the reptile industry by the mass imports of the past years. b) The concerns of serious private reptile keepers that they are facing a strict statutory prohibition of any kind of reptile keeping are not justified, but enhanced and misused by the reptile industry. c) Herpetology as a serious hobby can only decrease the pressure when stating a clear distancing of the commercial international wildlife trade.
