Abstract |
In front of the alarming decline of European Pond Turtle (Emys orbicularis) populations in Languedoc-Roussillon (France), the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels (CEN-LR) set up in 2006 a reintroduction program of this Pond Turtle in tow National Natural Reserves in Hérault : the Bagnas’ and Estagnol’s ones. 29 individuals of Camargue were introduced in Bagnas’ reserve. 26 of them survived the first year in an acclimatising pool and were released in the site. Then, they were tracked since April 2008 to our days. The current conclusions are encouraging, for the short time: the settlement varies from 61,54 % to 88, 46 % whereas the survival rate departs from 65,52 % to 89,65 %. However, there no proofs of any reproduction. Moreover, only a long time study can ensure the project success. Some advices had already been announced for the handling of the species on the reserve. Nevertheless a complement of actual data are necessary in order to assure an efficient and integrate handling for an enduring set of the new Pond Turtle population on the site. Finally, a population spread along the reserve had already been observed. Doubtlessly, it builds the first fruits of a future recolonization of the region thanks to ecological corridors.
