Abstract |
Testudinidae Testudo hermanni graeca marginata Emys orbicularis Mauremys leprosa This work deals with a synthesis of data on the late Quaternary occurrence of endemic herpetofaunaon the Mediterranean islands, and evidence of appearance of taxa extraneous to the native faunas. Data recently reported, shed new light on the permanence and extinction of autochthonous species and the arrival of continental ones. Their arrival might be directly related to the progressive advent of human colonisation of the islands. Hence, the question is how is the present insular herpetofauna connected to human intervention? In this review we show the close connection between human occupation of Mediterranean islands and present-day herpetofauna.
