Abstract |
My perspective of the lentic-lotic gradient is based primarily on the concept that estuaries and reservoirs possess a variety of strong environmental gradients as a result of the confluence of lotic water with more lentic water. Furthering the understanding of how aquatic organisms respond to fluctuating resources and conditions along the lotic-lentic gradient is the primary goal of this dissertation. Here I demonstrate that the limnological dynamics of the lotic-lentic gradient can impact such disparate groups as buoyancy regulating plankton, fish, and turtles in an ecological context. Future studies of organisms inhabiting reservoirs should rigorously monitor lotic inflow in addition to traditional limnological sampling. While this dissertation has demonstrated that the lotic-lentic transition is important in shaping the ecology of some aquatic organisms, much work has yet to be undertaken to discern the precise nature of both interspecific and intraspecific interactions along the lotic-lentic transition in reservoirs.
