Abstract |
Testudinidae The status of Testudo kleinmanni and T. werneri and their habitats was assessed in Egypt during surveys that took place between 1994 and 2003. The species have become extinct in most of their former range in the country. The main threats jeopardizing the future survival of these species are: extensive habitat destruction caused by overgrazing, agricultural expansion, urban encroachment and tourist development, and collection for the pet trade. However, a small population of T. werneri persists at Zaranik Protected Area, North Sinai, and recent evidence was found for this possible persistence of a small population of T. kleinmanni at El Omayed Protected Area on the Western Mediterranean Coast. Conservation measures adopted include protected areas and community-based conservation.
