Abstract |
Testudo hermanni Testudinidae In general, there are few data for Testudo hermanni boettgeri distribution in FYR of Macedonia (FYROM). All literature data published is referring on 27 localities with not more than 10 % of the territory coverage of the country. Since 1999 until 2012 intense field researches were undertaken with almost 70% of the total area of FYROM covered and dotted in UTM 10x10 km grid map. On the field several treats were noticed and in almost all cases are inflicted from human influence. The survival of species, as other reptilians, depends of the protection of habitats, which are extremely important in their life cycle. The lack of implementation of the legislatives in practice, disabled continuous control of collecting of specimens for the purposes of private collectors and contribute for habitat loss in FYROM. Furthermore, the fact that there are no educated experts regarding the protection and conservation of reptiles in general still makes difficulties in establishing control in protection of this species. Also, due to lack of population studies in our and neighboring countries, conservation status of this species could not be assessed.
