Abstract
Testudo hermanni Testudinidae Population studies of Testudo hermanni boettgeri in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula (Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro) were set up in year 2008. We performed CMR (Capture-Mark-Recapture) studies in eight populations, and marked more than 3 200 individuals. In Montenegro, we studied two populations – one island, at the Skadar Lake, and another mainland, in the central part of the country. Both populations are under intensive pressure by frequent fires, and the mainland population is additionally threatened by the road kills. In Serbia, we run population studies on three wild populations in the central and southern part of the country. Additionally, we started small (Rufford) project, to obtain more detailed distribution data as well as to generate DNA database from the native populations, for the future conservation measures (poaching and illegal trade) in Serbia and neighboring regions. In Macedonia, we conducted the most-effective CMR long-term studies, with more that 2 000 field days and more than 20 researchers and students (from several countries) included. Our study was set up at the Prespa Lake (southern part of the country) in two neighboring populations – one island and one mainland. Besides CMR studies, we run several behavioral tests, physiological research, morphological analyses, translocation and radio-telemetric studies, etc. We hope that the results of the comparative population studies from the central Balkans will be the basis for the estimation of the population status, threats and conservation measures for Hermann’s tortoises in the region.
