Abstract |
Testudinidae Renal dysfunction, including gout correlated with hyperuricemia, is a major cause of mortality in tortoises (Kölle 2000). Regarding therapy, allopurinol is equivocally rated. Some authors call the efficiency of allopurinol in reptiles into question (Frye 1991; Häfeli and Schildger 1995; Scheinert and others 1992), whereas Mautino and Page (1993) generally rated it effective. Martinez-Silvestre (1997) and Figueres (1997) reported on an improvement in clinical symptoms in a Mediterranean pond turtle, Mauremy leprosa and a spur thighed tortoise, Testudo graeca, suffering from gout.
