Abstract |
In 2000 and 2001, 14 vs 13 wild adults of Pond turtles (Emys orbicularis orbicularis) have been released in a protected area at the southern end of the lake Bourget (Savoie, France). The habitat includes two ponds (12 ha) with reedbeds a roselieres (overlay 50%), connected to the Lake Bourget (littoral reedbeds, nuphar and hydrophytes stands). Three "upland dunes" were designed within the site to allow laying. The first months of radio-tracking resulted in several encouraging results: Site exploration with no dispersal, fair xxcantonnement of most animals, excursions into the lake (ranging 1-5 km, several days -weeks) in 4 animals, laying attempts observed in two females in the dunes, wintering of all monitored animals (including most "emigrants") within the reintroduction pond. However, loss of contact in 5 individuals (transmitter failure, capture, car-crushing or dispersal) does not allow any conclusion as to stock survival. Implications of these observations and complementary experimentations are briefly discussed, aiming at transposable technical recommendations for similar projects.
